The Argentine Supreme Court has confirmed an oral trial against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and others in a money laundering case.

The Supreme Court of Justice of the Argentine Nation dismissed the appeal filed by former president and current vice president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, thereby confirming the ruling that revokes her dismissal and orders an oral hearing against her.

This ruling, which also affects her son, Máximo Kirchner, and 30 other defendants, is related to accusations of money laundering, illicit association, and acceptance of gifts linked to the Hotesur and Los Sauces companies, owned by the Kirchner family.

The decision of the highest court, signed by judges Horacio Rosatti, Carlos Rosenkrantz, Juan Carlos Maqueda, and Ricardo Lorenzetti, comes in a tense political context, coinciding with the recent assumption of new leaders in the Justicialista Party.

The Court argued that Fernández’s defense failed to demonstrate a concrete grievance that would justify the court’s intervention in this case, which paves the way for the commencement of the oral trial.

The judges indicated that “the judgment appealed against is not a final and comparable sentence,” which means that the judicial process will continue its normal course.

The case must now move to the oral trial stage, where the facts and responsibilities of the accused will be determined. Among those accused is also Romina de los Angeles Mercado, niece of Cristina Fernández and daughter of Minister of Social Development Alicia Kirchner.

The situation has created a climate of political uncertainty in the country, with critical voices denouncing an attempt at lawfare against the former president while her supporters defend her innocence and denounce political persecution.
